Whole Wheat Biscuits & Honey Butter

What?  You like my biscuits?  Yeah.  I know you want some.  Stop checking out my biscuits!  Sheesh!  We had some friends over the other night for a bbq.  I thought biscuits would be a perfect accompaniment.  I’ve had some wheat flour in our pantry drawer for awhile so I thought I’d roll with some wheat biscuits and use some of that schtuff up.  I didn’t have high standards set for these guys because  1.) I’ve never made biscuits before and 2.) I’ve never once had whole wheat biscuits.  I’ll promise you that our guests had no idea that they were whole wheat.  Ok, you can kinda tell by looking at them BUT no one questioned the look and they got wonderful reviews.  Oh, it also didn’t hurt matters that we slathered them with honey butter.  I just mixed 1/2 cup room temp butter with 1/2 cup honey until it was smooth.  Now tell me this….who doesn’t love them a warm fluffy biscuit with loads of creamy sweet butter oozing over it?  No one!

The recipe is from Danny Boom on Food Network.  No clue who he is but I sure like his biscuits;-)  Ladies, I’ve never seen his show but I just looked up some video footage of him in action.  Let me tell you what he’s definitely worth checking out for a few minutes….I’m just sayin’! 


  • 1 cup whole-wheat flour
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 teaspoons sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 stick unsalted butter, cold, cut into pieces
  • 1 cup buttermilk, cold

Preheat oven to 450°.

In a large bowl whisk flours, baking powder, baking soda, sugar, and salt. Cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse meal. Add buttermilk to dry ingredients, stirring until dry ingredients are moistened. Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead lightly 4 to 5 times. Roll or pat dough out to about 1-inch thickness. Cut with a biscuit cutter and place on an un-greased baking sheet. Bake for about 12 to 14 minutes or until brown.
